About me

Dr. Oleg Dmytrenko was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and studied Biology at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany. In 2018, he earned his PhD in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University for work on a novel Calvin cycle variant in chemoautotrophic bacterial symbionts. He then joined the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) in Würzburg, Germany, as a postdoctoral scientist. His research centered on revealing how closely related CRISPR-Cas systems can evolve fundamentally distinct immune mechanisms and how these properties can be harnessed for biotechnology. In 2026, he established the Synthetic Phage Biology (SynPhage) group at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences - Biotechnology (IBG-1).
