The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful supercomputer and quantum computer infrastructures in Europe and makes it available to scientists in Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany and Europe for research purposes. The "Communication Systems and Services" division at the JSC is an experienced and dedicated team with a diverse range of tasks. It is responsible for the planning, operation and further development of the data communication networks at the research centre (campus networks, Internet, supercomputer networks) and provides central systems and services for IT security. Through research and development work, the division ensures that these will continue to meet the high demands of a research institution in the future.

Your Job:

In the Networking Team you will work on the operation and further development of an efficient data communication infrastructure for the Research Centre. One focus is on supporting the data centre network for the supercomputers operated by JSC, including the new exascale computer JUPITER:

  • Developing and implementing suitable solutions for the networks in JSC, considering the specific requirements of a supercomputer centre
  • Close cooperation with other involved divisions of JSC



Depending on your qualifications and interests, you will also be active in areas such as: LAN, WLAN, cabling management, network monitoring, SDN, NAC.

Your Profile:

  • You have a bachelor`s or master`s degree (or comparable) in computer science/(techno)mathematics, engineering sciences or a related discipline or have professional experience in comparable activities.
  • You have experience and knowledge in data communication and one or more of the above-mentioned task areas
  • You are interested in familiarising yourself with new techniques and topics
  • You have a structured way of working and the ability to work cooperatively
  • You enjoy working with users and partners (in German and English) to develop communication solutions.
  • Ideally, you are familiar with the administration of macOS, Linux or Windows.
  • At best, you also have knowledge of one or more script languages.

You will be initially employed for a fixed term of 2 years but with the prospect of longer-term employment. Salary and social security benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund), pay group 11 or 13, depending on your current qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to you.
