Research Engineer – Materials and Manufacturing Engineering for High-Temperature Heat Pipe Components in Fusion Applications

titel

Forschungszentrum Jülich plays a central role in developing future fusion power plants. The Institute of Fusion Energy & Nuclear Waste Management – Plasma Physics (IFN-1) coordinates research on plasma-wall interaction within the Helmholtz Association`s national fusion program. This work is part of the European EUROfusion program and includes experimental and theoretical studies on developing, qualifying, and optimizing materials for the first wall in fusion devices, as well as investigating plasma-wall interaction in Wendelstein 7-X and future ITER. The advanced material concepts, diagnostic methods, and experimental techniques developed in fusion research also find applications in renewable energy technologies. The Innovative Heat Sink team focuses on developing novel fusion divertor plasma-facing components (PFCs) using high-temperature heat pipes. Within the BMBF-funded HPPFC project, they design and integrate liquid metal heat pipes into PFCs to enable highly efficient, reliable, and robust heat removal under extreme plasma conditions.
