ERC Starting Grant for Viviana Rincón Montes

Dr. Viviana Rincón Montes has been selected by the European Research Council (ERC) for an ERC Starting Grant with funding of up to € 1.5 million for her research on the human brain. The projects is laying the groundwork for a future form of medicine that promises to be more precise, less invasive, and more personalized.

For new brain implants, Dr. Viviana Rincón Montes is developing a biohybrid solution that combines technical materials with living cells. Such implants should be more readily accepted by brain tissue and could create new ways of treating neurological disorders. In the long term, such implants could operate more precisely and combine electrical and biological functions more effectively than today’s systems.

From Alzheimer to blindness

The researcher’s findings could help people in future whose motor, sensory, or communication abilities are impaired by neurological disorders – such as Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, or blindness.

Before this basic research project is ready for medical application, further research and extensive testing are required.

The full project title is “CoalescentBrain – Bio-camouflaged Neural Implants for Coalescent Brain Integration”.
