Managing Doctoral Projects
Management of a Doctoral Project (formally known as Doing Science)
The successful execution of a doctoral project requires a high level of professional competence. One element of this is the efficient organization and use of the scarce resources available. Another factor in success is proactive communication with the supervisor and within project teams.
This workshop imparts effective project and time management tools so that doctoral researchers can use their time optimally and successfully advance their research. In addition, the participants acquire basic knowledge in the areas of constructive communication and teamwork. Furthermore, important topics, such as the basics of advanced self-management, the intercultural dimension of successful communication and resilience in dealing with setbacks are taught.

Scientific Writing
This workshop supports doctoral researchers in areas that are challenging for many young researchers who have to produce scientific texts. Participants reflect on their own approaches to writing and develop professional strategies to deal with the difficulties and challenges they encounter in their writing processes. Participants get to know specific methods and techniques that they can transfer to their ongoing writing projects immediately and that facilitate effective, efficient, and successful professional writing. In addition, they get to know and discuss standards and prerequisites for having papers published in international journals. Issues of correct, clear and appropriate language and style also receive attention (Recommended for doctoral researchers in their first year)

Communicating (in) Science
Scientific Presentation
Although doctoral researchers will have certainly had experience giving presentations, they will now be required to present their own research and findings to a variety of audiences and often in contexts where they feel particularly under pressure (conferences, symposiums, etc.). It is becoming increasingly important to be able to communicate the core message of one’s research as this will lead to a variety of potential opportunities for young researchers. Additionally, the scientific community is very international and therefore another aspect, which is necessary, is fluency and accuracy in the English language, as well as a keen awareness of cultural sensitivity.

Innovation
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Did you know, that less than 5% of all researchers stay in academia for their entire career? Having a focus on the application of your research might not only be valuable for your personal career development, but it can also be very fulfilling to see your own research resulting in actual solutions for society and industry. There are many ways of transferring a scientific idea into a practical solution, be it in the form of a science based start-up, the licensing of a technology, or an open source project based on your developed software, beside others.
Those ways offer a lot of opportunities, but it can also be challenging to structure an idea and develop it into an innovation project.
In this course you will learn about what to consider when selecting, structuring, and developing an innovation project, and how Forschungszentrum Jülich supports you throughout the whole process. You also have the opportunity to apply the theory and methodological approaches directly to real innovation cases – ideally to your own innovation case!
(Please note: This course is mandatory only for doctoral researchers who started on 1 July 2021 or later. If you started your doctoral research at Forschungszentrum Jülich earlier, you may participate, but you do not have to.)
