Fuel synthesis and systems engineering (KST)

The core competencies the department are both hydrogen generation and synthesis gas purification for the provision of fuel gas for fuel cell systems, as well as system design and the testing of complete fuel cell systems. For this purpose, reforming and gas purification processes for various energy sources such as middle distillates, in particular for kerosene and diesel and diesel-like biofuels, are experimentally investigated and are described with process engineering and chemical models and implemented in technical reactors.

In aviation and shipping, as well as in heavy commercial vehicles, long-term liquid fuels with high energy densities are required. The power-to-fuel concept produces liquid fuels from sustainably-produced hydrogen and CO2. These methods are also used in fuel synthesis.
