My interests and what I do

I continue to work on NMR imaging where a significant challenge is to automate measurements with plants that are well climatised.

My current main interest is in the relation between shoot water content of plants and root water uptake during progressive soil water depletion. Here I use technologies that were mainly developed by several people of the Enabling Technologies group within the IBG-2, among that the newly developed Soil Water Profiler (SWaP). This provides unique insight in plant hydraulics that may become very relevant for research on drought resistance of plants. MRI root imaging can also be correlated with the plant hydraulics research so as to identify long term aspects of drought evasion, like stimulated root growth.

I have very broad scientific interests and furthermore like to apply cheap sensor technologies for plant phenotyping purposes so that these can also be used be less well equipped labs.
