The Utilization of Seawater and Process Waters for Steam Electrolysis in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells.
For the switch to green hydrogen as an energy carrier in today’s energy infrastructure, huge amounts of drinking/pure water are necessary with state-of-the-art water electrolysis technologies. However, pure water is only available in limited amounts on earth. Therefore, the utilization of seawater and process waters instead of pure water in solid oxide electrolysis cells is investigated in the Ph.D. project. Within the project, different contaminants such as sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, and sea salt are added to the electrolysis water supply to investigate their effect on the performance and degradation of the cells.
