Dr.-Ing. Andre Xhonneux studied mechanical engineering with a focus on energy engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He then wrote his doctoral thesis, supervised at RWTH Aachen University, on the topic of “Spatially resolved calculation of fission product release in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors with spherical and prismatic fuel elements” at the Institute for Energy and Climate Research in the Reactor Safety Department (IEK-6) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The focus of the work was the development of an extensive multi-physics code package for the mapping of all phenomena relevant for the accident calculation. As part of his job, he was primarily involved in the architecture of the code package and the data model. At the same time he was involved in the design and implementation of the lecture / exercise "Alternative Energy Technologies" and "Energy Economics" in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Since 2017, he has been working at the Institute for Energy and Climate Research in the Energy System Technology Institute (ICE-1) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Since end of 2020, he has been heading the “Buildings and Quarters” department. In the joint project Living Lab Energy Campus (LLEC), he heads the “Simulation and Software” group, which deals with the overall design of the energy demonstrators and the establishment of an information and communication (ICT) platform for the high-level operation of individual components in district energy systems. The implementation and demonstration of tailor-made models and algorithms in practice is of particular importance.
