Freestanding oxide membranes have drastically enhanced the field of oxide epitaxy and oxide electronic, yielding completely new opportunities to tune and use complex oxide, potentially in a similar way as the famous examples of 2D materials, such as graphene.

This roadmap paper on future perspective of freestanding oxide membranes (FOM) was co-edited by the PGI-7 (Felix Gunkel) and contains diverse perspectives on the synthesis, treatments, characterization and application of freestanding oxides by leading scientist across the globe, including PGI-7 contributions on perspetives on information technology (R. Dittmann) and energy materials (F. Gunkel).
