JCNS and ER-C Mourn the Loss of Board Member Prof. Harald Bolt

12 August 2021

We are all very shocked and saddened by the death of Jülich’s long-standing board member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harald Bolt, who passed away much too young. Prof. Bolt led Scientific Division II since 2008. He also temporarily took over as head of the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) and the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C) when there was no head of Scientific Division I. Beyond that, he had various common points of interest and carried out a variety of joint projects with JCNS and ER-C.

He attached particular importance to topics in the field of energy research and the exploitation of synergies. This is why, for example, an electron microscope (FEI Titan G2 80-200 ChemiSTEM), which was acquired through a joint project led by the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK), is operated cooperatively at ER-C. Furthermore, Prof. Bolt was committed to using neutron scattering, which is particularly sensitive to light elements such as hydrogen and lithium, in Jülich’s energy research.

In Harald Bolt, we have lost not only a brilliant and experienced member of the Board of Directors and an excellent scientist but also a very friendly and warm-hearted person who was full of good humour. He will be remembered with great fondness and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
