Aachen, 28. September 2021 With renovation work in the (new) corridors of the IAS-9 almost finished, the institute seized one of the last summerdays to welcome new international colleagues on a tour through the historic old town of Aachen.

Anton Pirogov now Carpentries Instructor

Jülich, 29. October 2021 IAS-9 research software developer Dr. Anton Pirogov has successfully completed a Carpentries Instructor certification training. The training covers the basics of educational psychology, evidence-based classroom practices, and how to apply both to teaching workshops for The Carpentries.

First IAS-9 Institute Retreat

Aachen, 18. November 2021 IAS-9 institute members got together on 21 and 22 October at Burg Obbendorf, Niederzier, for the very first institutes retreat. The retreat provided the sorely missed opportunity for in person communication, idea exchange and poster presentations.

The new website will provide a fresh view to the multidisciplinary Institute for Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9), its three main thematic areas and the people behind IAS-9. Please bear with us and stay tuned!

New Tool: METADOR

METADOR is here! This useful tool provides a file upload service with resumable uploads and rich metadata requirements. It can be use to comfortably share data in collaborations while enforcing submission of relevant metadata. You can use METADOR to (1) predefine the metadata requirements for a specific dataset, (2) validate entered metadata against a schema, (3) associate your research data files with structured (JSON) metadata.

Nicolas Carpi visits Jülich

Nicolas Carpi, the developer of the electronic lab notebook eLabFTW, will visit Jülich from 4th April to 30th June. The eLabFTW software is one of the most widespread ELNs and is used at various institutes at Jülich. Nicolas’ visit at the IEK-2 is funded by the HIDA Visiting Researcher Grant.

In its first hybrid mini symposium at Technologiezentrum Aachen (TZA) IAS-9 spotlighted concepts and tools for (meta)data management.

Doctoral student Aytekin Demirci now member of HDS-LEE Graduate School

IAS-9 doctoral student Aytekin Demirci is now a member of the Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy (HDS-LEE), where he will work on Data mining of Discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DDD) simulations and machine learning to accelerate the design of new materials for extreme conditions, under the supervision of Prof. Stefan Sandfeld and Prof. Axel Klawonn.

First IAS-9 barbecue with special guest Péter Dusán Ispánovity

To celebrate the good weather and the visit of Dr. Péter Dusán Ispánovity from Eötvös University, Department of Materials Physics, Budapest, IAS-9 enjoyed a casual barbecue on 30 May 2022.
