99 years after the first discovery of cosmic rays, high-energetic charged particles reaching Earth from outer space, the AMS-02 detector has been installed on the International Space Station ISS. AMS-02 is a multi-purpose instrument for the study of almost all components of cosmic rays whose large collection area and versatile components make it the superior experiment in its field for many years to come.

From the computing point of view, the extremely high data rate that AMS-02 offers poses a significant challenge in terms of data handling and data analysis.

In this talk, I will give a gentle introduction to cosmic-ray research, present the scientific motivation for the AMS-02 project, and highlight selected aspects of the performance of the instrument. I will pay special attention to the ongoing computing efforts related to AMS-02 on the JUROPA cluster.
