Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC)

We operate supercomputers of the highest performance class, thus enabling scientists and engineers to solve their highly complex problems by simulations. Our research and development concentrates on mathematical modelling and numerical, especially parallel algorithms for quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics and Monte-Carlo simulations. The focus in the computer sciences is on cluster computing, performance analysis of parallel programs, visualization, federated systems, data science and models of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, we operate the Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum computing (JUNIQ).

Theoretical Physics of Living Matter (IAS-2)

We employ theory, modeling, and simulation to study and understand the structure, self-assembly, and dynamics of complex fluids, active soft matter, and living matter - on the basis of physical principles.We focus on the investigation systems far from thermal equilibrium, in particular the collective behaviour of mesoscopic self-propelled objects as well as the flow behaviour of biofluids.

Theory of the Strong Interactions (IAS-4)

The institute "Theory of Strong Interaction" (IAS-4) deals with strong interactions in the non-perturbative arena, in particular with the structure and dynamics of hadrons and atomic nuclei. Of particular interest is the spectrum of quantum chromodynamics, such as the calculation of the properties of unstable hadrons and nuclear reactions which play an important role in the synthesis of elements in stars. Fundamental tools are Monte Carlo simulations of the QCD path integral and the development of effective field theories for nuclear structure in the continuum as well as on the lattice. With the nuclear lattice simulation method developed at IAS-4, a completely new approach to the calculation of strongly interacting quantum systems has been created. These stochastic methods are also successfully applied to strongly correlated electronic systems such as graphene or carbon nano-structures.

The institute develops and uses molecular simulation, machine learning and bioinformatics tools to investigate neurotransmission in the human brain.

Computational and Systems Neuroscience (INM-6) & Theoretical Neuroscience (IAS-6)

Progress in the understanding of complex systems like the brain can only be achieved by integrating models on many different scales. The research performed at the institute for Computational and Systems Neuroscience develops such multi-scale models of the brain, combining data-driven development of brain theory with the bottom-up approach of directly simulated structured networks, and the top down approach, mapping functional models of higher brain function to spiking dynamics.

Civil Safety Research (IAS-7)

The dynamics of fire and pedestrian flows are being researched by an international team of scientists in mathematics, physics, social psychology, computer science, and engineering. The research methods include experiments, modeling and computer simulations.

Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9)

The multidisciplinary Institute for Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9) combines disciplines ranging from data analysis and materials simulation to research data management and software development under one roof. It thereby addresses the topic of "information" and research data as a way to combine simulations, experimental testing and microscopy in a strongly inter-and multidisciplinary research approach. For this, methods from the field of Computational Material Science are used together with approaches and concepts from Informatics, Data Science and Information Science.
