Since about 6 to 8 years, CFD simulations in the context of fire safety engineering are applied in the railway industry. Since then customers require more detailed information about the peak heat release rate or the heat release rate curve. The simulations are used to demonstrate the fire safety of the vehicles and support train manufactures to reduce project risk in questions of running capability and fire resistance. For fire spread and the estimation of peak heat release rates methods like the Duggan method or empirical formulas are available, but these result often in highly conservative heat release rates with unrealistic assumptions. CFD simulations allow more detailed analysis, though the effort rises.
The presentation will talk about fire simulation in general and should lead to a discussion in the end. The agenda of the presentation will be:
- Short introduction about Bombardier Transportation and the Aero- and Thermodynamics department
- General overview about fire simulations with CFD within the railway industry
- Applied tools for fire simulation
- Presentation of possible approaches to fire spread modelling
- The availability and usage of different ignition sources in combination with other challenges
- Outlook and Discussion
Anyone interested is cordially invited to participate in this seminar.
