As part of the site selection process for a deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste in Germany, representative preliminary safety assessments (rvSU) are conducted to identify potential siting regions. A key component of the rvSU, as well as of the more advanced and comprehensive preliminary safety assessments required in the subsequent stages of the process, are numerical simulations of the radionuclide migration in the repository system and their evaluation based on safety criteria specified in the respective ordinance on safety requirements for the repository (EndlSiAnfV).

In this research project, scientists from IFN-2, in collaboration with the Institute for Nuclear Waste Disposal at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT-INE) and the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) (GRS), a simplified nuclide scheme was developed for the rvSU that captures all radionuclides relevant to the transport simulations, thus identifying all radionuclides pertinent to both the mass release criteria as well as the dose criterion of the EndlSiAnfV. This combination of safety criteria for assessing the safe containment of radioactive wastes has not been used in this form in either national or international safety case studies before.
