Hydrometallurgical separation processes

We conduct application-oriented basic research for the targeted separation of certain elements from radioactive waste using hydrometallurgical separation processes. The separation and individual treatment of certain components of radioactive waste can contribute to an improvement in deep geological disposal. Radioactive elements (e.g. 99Tc, americium, etc.) as well as chemotoxic elements (e.g. mercury) or other problematic waste components play a role.

Research Topics

The current focus is on the separation of americium and the understanding of the complexation of f-elements with the chelating agents used. We are involved in national and international cooperation projects in which topics in the field of basic research are dealt with in addition to application-oriented studies. An integral part is the training and promotion of young scientists in the field of nuclear safety research and nuclear chemistry. The further development and preservation of scientific and technical competence in nuclear safety research and actinide chemistry is of particular importance.
