E-MailAs part of the EU-funded FREDMANS project, concepts are being developed both for the production of alternative nuclear fuels and for the recycling of spent innovative nuclear fuels. The focus is on nitride fuels. The use of these materials, which are characterised by higher fissionability and better thermal conductivity than conventional oxide fuels, can both increase the operational safety of nuclear power stations and reduce costs. FREDMANS is concerned not only with the recycling of spent nuclear fuel, in which IFN-2 is involved, but also with that of the related nitrogen-15 isotope.
The project covers the entire spectrum of advanced manufacturing, recyclability, waste management and industrial applications of innovative nuclear fuels. Furthermore, particular attention is paid to the education and training of students and early-career researchers.
