E-MailThe international Muons@Grimsel project is investigating the suitability of muon tomography for safeguards geological repositories. During the project's initial phase, an underground tunnel at the Grimsel Test Site (GTS) was simulated using muon tomography. This simulation served as a basis for identifying technical and methodological challenges, as well as coordinating potential technical solutions. A field test is planned for the second phase. During this test, muon tomography detectors will be used in the GTS underground laboratory to measure the infrastructure area that was used for the simulations. The primary goal of this field test is to verify and validate the simulation results.
The project is an international collaboration between the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH (BGE), Geoptic, NAGRA (the operator of the GTS underground laboratory), and Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ).
