Shutdown of COSY and transition of IKP-3 to IAS-4

At the beginning of 2021 year, the formal transition of IKP, with exception of the theory group (IKP-3/IAS-4), from Forschungszentrum Jülich to GSI/FAIR commenced. The implementation of this transition is regulated in a contract called TransFAIR, which has been approved by BMBF and signed by both laboratories. The TransFAIR contract foresaw a multi-year transition period, in which the activities at IKP and the associated resources were incrementally transferred from FZJ to GSI. The central element unifying IKP was the operation of and experiments with COSY. In October 2023, after 30 years of operation, COSY and the associated experiments were stopped. Upon completion of its mission, COSY will be decommissioned and the corresponding resources reallocated to the operation of parts of the FAIR accelerator complex.

At the beginning of 2024, the dual membership of the theory group (IKP-3/IAS-4) was further abolished and the group has since been exclusively IAS-4, and is therefore no longer part of the IKP.
