The Institute for Energy Materials and Devices (IMD) conducts research and development for advanced materials, devices and technologies for energy applications. An important goal of our institute is the development of resource-efficient energy solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability. IMD combines both basic research and application-oriented science to ensure the transfer and translation of knowledge from the nano to the macro scale.

IMD-1 advances material design for energy applications by leveraging microstructure-property-processing correlations and mechanism-based descriptions of materials behavior. High-resolution microscopy, automation, data-driven approaches, and close collaboration across experimentation and simulation are integrated to achieve this goal.

IMD-2 uses its established expertise in the synthesis of new materials and their processing methods to develop reliable ceramic coating systems, composite materials and multilayered components for energy technologies.

IMD-3 advances sustainable photovoltaics by researching novel materials and device architectures across various thin-film systems and technological applications with emphasis on comprehensive characterization and modeling for targeted development.
