First major milestone reached for the new ESS moderator system!

The moderator- and reflector-system is one of the key components of the European Spallation Neutron Source ESS. Its task is to slow down the high-energy neutrons released by the tungsten target and to guide the moderated neutrons to the instruments.
The ITE is already developing and manufacturing the second generation of such a system for the ESS. A first major milestone has been reached already, namely the successful production of the novel liquid hydrogen moderator. This moderator is a major engineering and manufacturing challenge. In particular, joining of the high-strength aluminum alloy used requires years of experience.
The entire system will be delivered to the ESS next year and will make an important contribution to cutting-edge research at the ESS.
