Dr. Fabio Fiorani

At the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, Plant Sciences (IBG-2) at Forschungszentrum Jülich we focus on sustainable solutions to improve plant production for a sustainable agriculture. Key areas include plant phenotyping, analysis of plant-environment interactions, and the development of alternative biomass sources. By integrating molecular, physiological, and ecological approaches, we support the bioeconomy and promote resource efficiency and adaptation to changing climate conditions. I received the B.S. degree in agricultural sciences from the University of Milan, Italy, and the Ph.D. degree in plant ecophysiology from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. I held post-doctoral positions at Duke University, NC, USA, and at the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology, Plant Systems Biology, Ghent, Belgium, from 2001 to 2007. From 2007 to 2010, I was a Senior Scientist with Crop Design, BASF Plant Science in Ghent, Belgium. Since 2010, I led a multi-disciplinary group at the Institute of Plant Sciences (Jülich Plant Phenotyping Center - JPPC), Forschungszentrum Jülich, focusing on development and application of screening methods for quantifying plant growth dynamics nondestructively. I currently continue research on plant acclimation to environmental stresses as a senior scientist at FZJ-IBG-2 in the JPPC research group.

Am Institut für Bio- und Geowissenschaften, Bereich Pflanzenwissenschaften (IBG-2) am Forschungszentrum Jülich erforschen wir nachhaltige Lösungen zur Verbesserung der Pflanzenproduktion für eine nachhaltige Landwirtschaft. Schwerpunkte liegen auf der Pflanzenphänotypisierung, der Analyse von Pflanzen-Umwelt-Wechselwirkungen und der Entwicklung alternativer Biomassequellen. Durch die Kombination von molekularen, physiologischen und ökologischen Ansätzen unterstützen wir die Bioökonomie und tragen zur Ressourceneffizienz und Anpassung an Klimaveränderungen bei. Ich habe an der Universität Mailand, Italien, Agrarwissenschaften studiert und an der Universität Utrecht, Niederlande, in Pflanzenökophysiologie promoviert. Von 2001 bis 2007 war ich als Postdoktorand an der Duke University, North Carolina, USA, und am Flämischen Institut für Biotechnologie, Pflanzensystembiologie, Gent, Belgien, tätig. Von 2007 bis 2010 war ich Senior Scientist bei Crop Design, BASF Plant Science in Gent, Belgien. Seit 2010 leite ich eine multidisziplinäre Gruppe am Institut für Pflanzenwissenschaften (Jülich Plant Phenotyping Center - JPPC) des Forschungszentrums Jülich, die sich mit der Entwicklung und Anwendung von Screening-Methoden zur zerstörungsfreien Quantifizierung der Wachstumsdynamik von Pflanzen beschäftigt. Derzeit forsche ich als Senior Scientist am FZJ-IBG-2 in der JPPC-Forschungsgruppe weiter an der Akklimatisierung von Pflanzen an Umweltbelastungen.
