Dr.-Ing Yiran Mao. Since 01.07.2025, I am leading the BMBF-funded junior research group - Innovative Heat Sink - at IFN-1. My group is developing novel high-temperature heat pipes as plasma-facing components for future fusion reactors. The goal is to significantly enhance thermal management in fusion devices by integrating advanced heat pipe technologies, tailored materials, and smart component design.
I studied materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University (M.Sc. and Ph.D.), with a research focus on the development of advanced materials and composites. Prior to my current position, I worked as a research scientist for 5 years in IFN-1 since 2019, contributing to fusion materials.
Our group combines materials development, high heat flux testing, and technology transfer. We collaborate with academic and industrial partners. I'm passionate about advancing fusion energy as a viable future energy source and supporting young scientists in their careers.
