At the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, Plant Sciences (IBG-2) at Forschungszentrum Jülich we focus on sustainable solutions to improve plant production for a sustainable agriculture. Key areas include plant phenotyping, analysis of plant-environment interactions, and the development of alternative biomass sources. By integrating molecular, physiological, and ecological approaches, we support the bioeconomy and promote resource efficiency and adaptation to changing climate conditions. My research activities focus on microalgae as a source of new materials and a key component of a circular bio-economy. Additionally, I am exploring the potential of microalgae as an innovative income source in rural areas. The urgent issues of carbon and nutrient sequestration, and food security, demand innovative solutions and alternative biomass producers. The diverse and robust metabolic set-up found in the various microalgal classes makes them an attractive proposition. They have the potential to provide solutions to urgent human and environmental challenges. Furthermore, the combination of versatile biotechnological potential and research gaps in the "Omics" of macro- and microalgal species provides numerous opportunities for the development of interdisciplinary cooperation between academia and industry. The project InnoLab: AlgaeFertilizerBox can act as a catalyst for intensified algal applications in the recovery of waste streams, run-offs and deteriorated soils, as well as in the production of raw materials and bioenergy.
