Research Focus

I am interested in understanding the structure and function of the human cerebral cortex, particularly the frontal lobe which is involved in higher cognitive functions, language, motor control and complex social behaviour.

My research focuses on the mapping of cortical areas based on differences in the receptor densities (receptor architecture) as well as in the arrangement of cells, their distribution, composition and layering (cytoarchitecture). Three-dimensional maps of newly identified cortical areas (e.g. the primary and premotor cortex as well as the inferior frontal sulcus and junction) are integrated into the Julich-Brain Atlas (https://atlases.ebrains.eu/viewer). They allow for precise spatial localisation in standardised brain spaces and provide interindividual information. Such maps form a critical bridge between postmortem microanatomical data and in vivo studies. The structural maps are systematically compared with results from neuroimaging studies to functionally characterise the newly mapped areas.
