E-MailThe PREDIS project targeted the development and implementation of safer treatment and conditioning methodologies in the field of predisposal of radioactive waste streams other than spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. PREDIS aimed at further development and increase in Technological Readiness Level (TRL) of treatment and conditioning methodologies for wastes for which no adequate or industrially mature solutions are currently available. PREDIS addressed innovation and break-through technologies for an improved handling of low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes, focusing on the treatment of metallic materials as well as solid and liquid organic wastes resulting from nuclear power plant operation, decommissioning and other industrial processes. In addition, the PREDIS project addressed digitalization solutions (e.g. digital twins) for improved safety and efficiency in handling and assessing cemented-waste packages in extended interim surface storage. Through all these pre-disposal activities, waste acceptance criteria were a critical parameter for optimising the safe and efficient handling and minimisation of wastes over the whole life cycle, from cradle to grave. Activities at IFN-2 within PREDIS focussed on the corrosion behaviour of metallic beryllium wastes under conditions expected in various cementitious encapsulation matrices such as Ordinary Portland Cement or magnesium phosphate cement.
