"Impressive research results" - external panel of experts evaluates the final results of the Human Brain Project

From November 21 to 24, the final review of the Human Brain Project (HBP) took place in Brussels, where members of the HBP consortium presented the project results to a panel of external scientific experts. The focus was on the final phase of the HBP, which ended in September 2023. The results were presented in detailed project reports and presentations, followed by extensive question-and-answer sessions.

The expert panel drew a very positive balance when it communicated the preliminary results of the review to the consortium and the European Commission on November 24, 2023. In their first statement, the reviewers spoke of the impressive results of the project: the legacy of the HBP could be "decisive for a new phase of neuroscience", as the project has laid the foundations for research collaboration on a very large scale, with long-term implications for innovation and understanding of the brain. The detailed written review report is currently being finalized and is expected to be submitted to the European Commission in early 2024.

The full preliminary opinion of the review panel:

"The HBP has achieved impressive research results and created an open research infrastructure that is positioned to have a transformative impact in Europe and beyond. Already today, the EBRAINS infrastructure is enabling new applications in brain health and brain-inspired technologies. The HBP has established a new paradigm of digital neuroscience and a new interdisciplinary culture of collaboration.Particular highlights include leading digital brain atlases, advanced brain simulation platforms at multiple scales, the application of cognitive modeling and personalized medicine, and outstanding advances in neuromorphic computing and neuro-inspired robotics and AI.In light of these achievements, the HBP has fostered highly interdisciplinary research that expands our understanding of the brain. The legacy of the HBP can be fundamental to a new phase of neuroscience."

About the Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) was the largest brain research project in Europe and one of the largest research projects ever funded by the European Union. It was one of the EU's three FET flagship projects. At the interface of neuroscience and information technology, the HBP investigated the brain and its diseases using sophisticated methods from computer science, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence, and drove innovation in areas such as brain-inspired computing and neurorobotics. As a long-term contribution to the global scientific community, the HBP has created EBRAINS, an open European research infrastructure that enables scientists and technology experts to collaborate efficiently and accelerate progress in the fields of neuroscience, computer science and medicine.

About EBRAINS:

EBRAINS is a new digital research infrastructure created by the EU-funded Human Brain Project to advance neuroscience research and translate the latest scientific discoveries into medical and industrial innovations that benefit patients and society. The platform offers a wide range of brain datasets, a cross-scale brain atlas, modeling and simulation tools, easy access to high-performance computing resources as well as robotics and neuromorphic platforms.

All academic researchers have open access to EBRAINS. Researchers from industry are also welcome to use the platform under specific agreements. For more information about EBRAINS, please contact info@ebrains.eu or visit the website www.ebrains.eu.www.ebrains.eu.
