Structural and functional organisation of the brain

At INM-1, a 3D model of the human brain is being developed that takes into account cytoarchitectonics, connectivity, molecular structure as well as genetics and brain function.

Julich Brain Atlas

“Julich-Brain” is the name of the first 3D atlas of the human brain, which depicts the variability of the brain structure with microscopic resolution. The atlas currently comprises more than 230 maps and reflects inter-individual differences in brain anatomy.

Brain, Computing and AI

The INM-1 builds 3D models of the human brain at the level of individual cells and nerve fibers by processing terabytes of image data. This is only possible by developing complex distributed workflows on the Supercomputing systems in Jülich and the development of new AI approaches. The exascale supercomputer JUPITER makes it possible to analyse the brain with an unprecedented level of detail.

Serotonin receptors

Differences in the brains of humans and rats

The neurotransmitter serotonin plays a crucial role in the brain's processing of emotions. In depressive disorders, serotonergic signaling is often disrupted. To better understand the development of the disorder, researchers from INM-1 are investigating serotonin receptors in the brains of humans and rats. They discovered significant differences.

Research

Motor disorder: Brain stimulation proves effective

Scientists have presented a new case report on the effect of deep brain stimulation in a patient with a rare genetic motor disorder. Caused by the mutation of a gene called POLR3A, this disease often results in a pronounced so-called action tremor, which disrupts any voluntary movement of the affected person through severe tremor.
