Plant Sciences

Targeted irrigation: app supports farmers with water management

In order to make agriculture more resilient to climate change, targeted irrigation of plants is beneficial. As part of the DIRECTION project, the Institute of Plant Research (IBG-2) at Forschungszentrum Jülich and partners have developed a mobile phone app that runs a model based on real-time and weather forecast data to determine the water requirements of plants in the coming weeks.

Antibiotics

New approach for antibiotic development

The opportunistic bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is dangerous due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics. A research team from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) and Jülich Research Center (Forschungszentrum Jülich – FZJ) has now found a mechanism that makes it possible to weaken the virulence of the pathogen. Based on this knowledge, a new approach for antibiotics can be developed, as the authors explain in the scientific journal JACS Au.
