A recent publication co-authored by Nils Hoffmann and an international consortium of lipidomics experts presents a novel point-based scoring system for evaluating the quality of lipid identifications in scientific studies.
As lipidomics research grows in scope and complexity, the ability to transparently communicate the analytical evidence behind reported lipid species is essential. The proposed scoring system assigns points based on the type and amount of analytical information available—such as mass spectrometry data, ion mobility, or chromatographic separation—used to support each lipid identification.
Each evidence feature contributes a defined score, with codes representing the nature of the data provided. The system is tailored to different lipid classes, taking into account their structural complexity and fragmentation behavior.
