“Horizon” magazine on the Human Brain Project and brain research in the EU
“The achievements we have made would not have been possible otherwise.” - This is how Prof. Katrin Amunts sums up the importance of the Human Brain Project (HBP) for neuroscience in Europe. The quote comes from an article in HORIZON, the EU magazine for research and innovation, which has just been published together with an accompanying video. Katrin Amunts was Scientific Director of the HBP from 2016 to 2023 and is now Joint CEO of EBRAINS.
Under the title “Mapping the mind - EU-funded research unlocks secrets of the human brain”, the article refers to achievements such as the Julich Brain Atlas and outlines challenges such as improved treatment options for brain diseases and the contributions that digital neuroscience can make to the development of neuromorphic computing and artificial intelligence (AI).
The central element here is EBRAINS: the research platform for the neurosciences, which emerged from the HBP and is open to scientists all over the world, offers digital tools as well as access to brain atlases, data and enormous computing capacities.
