Dennis Scheidt at LUMO in Mexico
Until October 10, 2025, Dr. Dennis Scheidt is conducting a research stay at the Laboratory for Optical Micromanipulation (Laboratorio Universitario de Micromanipulación Óptica, LUMO) of the Institute of Physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This collaboration with the local project partner, Alejandro Vásquez Arzola, is supported by the Wolfgang Schlegel Fellowship of the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP).
Dennis Scheidt, a member of the “Fiber Architecture” research group led by Professor Markus Axer, is focusing his work on a digital holographic microscope that was jointly developed with LUMO in the previous year. This instrument enables the reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of volumetric samples and has already been successfully employed to resolve the 3D architecture of crossing nerve fibers in rat brain tissue on the basis of a single recorded hologram.

During the current research stay, the microscope will be further advanced to incorporate vectorial light field measurement capabilities. This enhancement is intended to capture polarization information of the examined specimens, thereby providing deeper insights into the structural properties of nerve fibers—most notably with respect to the birefringent characteristics of the myelin sheaths.
