Social cognitive studies include mainly behavioral and functional imaging experiments. To induce particular socially relevant mental states in healthy subjects virtual avatars are used.

Those avatars are able to generate the experience of social presence and their appearance, facial gestures and eye movements can be manipulated systemically.
