Lectures of the JCNS Laboratory Course Neutron Scattering
A two-week laboratory course in neutron scattering is conducted once a year by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University. The course aims to give a realistic insight into the experimental technique of neutron scattering and its scientific potential. It consists of a series of lectures held at Forschungszentrum Jülich and the opportunity to take part in neutron scattering experiments at the neutron source FRM II in Garching near Munich.
The lectures encompass an introduction to neutron sources, along with scattering theory and instrumentation. Furthermore, selected topics of condensed matter research are presented.

Lectures of the IFF Spring School 2012 “Scattering Methods for Condensed Matter Research: Towards Novel Applications at Future Sources”
The lecture notes of the 2012 IFF Spring School of Forschungszentrum Jülich provide a solid introduction to the basics of scattering methods, including but not limited to neutrons. Topics of the lectures include:
- the interaction of X-rays, neutrons and electrons with matter
- scattering theory and correlation functions
- collective excitations in crystalline matter
- the dynamics of large molecules
- sources and instrumentation for synchrotron and neutron radiation
- European projects such as the free electron laser XFEL and the spallation source ESS
- innovative scattering techniques at these future sources
- application of scattering techniques to study superconductivity, polymer dynamics, nanostructures, protein crystallography, and energy materials
- complementary techniques
