ICE-4 conducts basic research relevant to climate and weather forecasting, the improvement of which is one of the key societal challenges of the 21st century. Over the past 25 years, scientists from the Institute have frequently acted as authors and reviewers of international reports (e.g. IPCC, WMO, SPARC), which essentially serve to advise decision-makers. Numerous scientific articles from the Institute have also been directly incorporated into these reports.
Cooperation with the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) contributes to the improvement of weather forecasts.
By coordinating or playing a leading role in numerous ESA studies, it has also been possible to contribute the expertise of employees in the field of remote sensing to ESA's Earth observation program. This has also resulted in a wide range of collaborations with industrial partners, e.g. in the context of instrument development, studies or E2E simulators.
