The ICE-4 consists of 5 divisions and 2 cross-sectional groups (Scientific IT and Data Management, Mechanics & Electronics)

Water Vapour and Clouds

We observe and simulate water vapor transport and the microphysics of cirrus clouds with airborne and balloon-borne instrumentation and microphysics models.

Ultra Trace Species

We develop, build and operate highly specialized air- and balloon-borne instruments that measure ultra trace gases which drive highly climate and ozone relevant rocesses. The data are employed to test and improve predictions of state-of-the-art climate models.

Remote Sensing

Tomography of the middle atmosphere based on airplanes, balloons and satellites facilitates novel analyses of waves and transport. We develop new instruments and retrieval methods and gain scientific insight for application in climate models.

Theory and Simulation

We simulate chemical-physical processes in the atmosphere. These processes are described in mathematical form and the results are compared with measurements.

Climate Data Analysis

We perform climate data analysis using both model data and observations to explain observed and predict future changes in the stratosphere and their coupling to the climate system.

Cross-sectional groups

Mechanics & Electronics

Tasks of the matrix group are the technical design and fabrication of complex atmospheric measurement instrumentation as well as the maintenance and deployment in the lab and during field campaigns.

Scientific IT and Data Management

The group is responsible for the operation of the institute's own IT and and acts as a direct point of contact for all problems in the area of IT and software development.
