Salma Djakkani successfully defended her master thesis

Salma Djakkani successfully defended her master thesis with the title “Dendritic Spines and Synaptic Densities in the Mouse Cortex: Effects of Sleep and Sleep Deprivation“ within the master program Experimental & Clinical Neuroscience of the University Cologne under the supervision of Prof. Dr. med. David Elmenhorst, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Björn Kampa and Dr. rer. nat. Astrid Rollenhagen. Congratulations!

Golgi impregnation enabled full visibility of individual neurons, including their dendrites and dendritic spines, to analyze pyramidal cell structures and synaptic density in layers 2/3 and 5 of the somatosensory and visual cortex of young mice.

Overview of a brain section showing the somatosensory cortex at 4x magnification under the light microscope.
Example of pyramidal cells at 40x magnification under the light microscope.
Counting dendritic spines with the “Neurolucida” program at 60x magnification under the light microscope.
