Status update on research data management at JSC

Abstract:
Data obtained from measurements or simulations is the fundamental basis of research. While in the past the results derived from the data were the subject of interest and scientific publications the underlying data only gained increasingly more attention in the past years. There are internal and external requirements imposed on scientific data from e.g. collaborators, funding agencies, and journals. The responsibility of responding to these requirements is within each organizational unit (institute) at FZJ and practically often with the individual researcher. Given the vast amount of scientific data produced this can become challenging in terms of e.g. physical storage, data organization, data publication. For the more generic and some specific aspects of research data management the FZJ started providing central solutions. Also at JSC various complementary solutions have been set up.

In an interview-like format we will provide information on the current state of the following aspects of research data management that can be useful to all data generating JSC members:

  • Internal and external requirements
  • Long term storage
  • Data publication
  • Metadata and persistent identifiers

Since the data produced by JSC researchers is very diverse, there will be no single solution that fits all needs. The interview-like format will allow for a high degree of interaction. We are looking forward to your comments and questions.
