Materials science

Materials science simulations face formidable challenges with respect to the extreme heterogeneity of the systems to be simulated, as well as the data, complexity and dynamics. Work focuses on pushing the limits of state of the art methods in terms of scalability, improving the numerical complexity and supporting the portability of high-performance codes between different computer architectures. Communities in the field materials science will find support by three Simulation and Data Labs. JSC hosts one research group in this field.

Neuroscience

The SDL Neuroscience (Subtopic 1) focuses on the development of new data analytics and ML methods for neuroimaging, optimized for HPC systems by utilizing a range of techniques including image processing pipelines, data mining methodology, uncertainty management, ML and inference methods. JSC hosts one Simulation and Data Lab in the field neuroscience.

Earth system science at JSC

JSC supports Earth System Model (ESM) development as one key supercomputer application with large societal relevance. ESMs are challenging even the biggest HPC systems (due to their great needs for computational capacity, storage and interconnection bandwidth) and they are challenged by the disruptive changes in HPC architectures, which require novel and complex programming models. ESM activities at JSC seek to bridge between the demands of ESM scientists and the pioneers of novel exascale HPC technology. We are providing high-level support to the scientific community and develop new solutions with scientific and technical insight.

Quantum computing

The research group Quantum Information Processing pursues the goal to investigate by means of highly scalable computer simulations the benefits of quantum over classical processes for applications in quantum computing and quantum annealing. A Simulation and Data Lab on Quantum Computing is in preparation.
