Network Combats Environmental Problems in Mediterranean Region

France and Germany initiate Euro-Mediterranean partnership

Berlin/Jülich, 13 October 2011 – In the presence of the research ministers of France and Germany – Laurent Wauquiez and Annette Schavan – research centres from both countries signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday.

In this cooperation, German and French research institutions intend to develop solutions for adapting to global change in the Mediterranean region.

The French research consortium SICMED is thus joining forces with the German TERENO-MED network. The latter aims to undertake long-term investigations into the impacts of demographic, economic and climate change on Mediterranean water resources and ecosystems.

The TERENO-MED network is headed by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in cooperation with Forschungszentrum Jülich.
