ELIXIR Germany

Germany has been a member of the European research infrastructure ELIXIR Europe (European Life Science Infrastructure for Biological Information) since 2016. ELIXIR works according to the hub-and-node principle and brings together bioinformatics resources and expertise from the fields of databases, software, training and cloud computing from all over Europe. ELIXIR expert groups develop interoperability guidelines for these areas. The aim is to facilitate access to life science data and tools, promote research and support the international exchange of expertise.

ELIXIR Germany was established by the BMBF as the national node to contribute to the development of a transnational bioinformatics infrastructure.

ELIXIR Germany therefore plays a central role in the coordination and provision of bioinformatics services and resources at national and international level. These make it easier for researchers to find, analyze and share data according to the FAIR principles, exchange expertise and establish best practices in the life sciences.

In addition, the ELIXIR Core Data Resources BRENDA, SILVA and BacDive as well as the ELIXIR Recommended Interoperability Resource European Galaxy Server are provided and operated by the network partners of ELIXIR Germany.

The German ELIXIR node is operated by the members of the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI) with the overarching goal of harmonizing the national service offering with the European partners.

The "ELIXIR Germany" department at IBG-5

The ELIXIR Germany department supports the "Head of Node" in the strategic development of the German ELIXIR node and acts as a central point of contact for the ELIXIR Hub in the implementation of international ELIXIR projects.

It plays a key role in the coordination and management of the diverse activities and initiatives within the ELIXIR Germany network. This includes the organization of regular events to promote knowledge sharing and collaboration within ELIXIR Germany and the entire ELIXIR structure. As part of the service offerings, the ELIXIR Germany department coordinates the German Service Delivery Plan and monitors the flow of funds in the ELIXIR node. It also identifies and acquires funding and grants to support research projects and initiatives.
