14 July 2025 In recognition of his outstanding achievements in battery research and development, the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) has appointed Martin Winter as its Member/Fellow. Winter is the founder and scientific director of MEET Battery Research Center at the University of Münster and Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS) of Forschungszentrum Jülich. With this election, the Academy recognizes his remarkable research, his contributions to the global scientific dialogue and his international standing, according to the EurASc General Board.

Appreciation for Teamwork

“Being elected to the European Academy of Sciences is not only an appreciation of my work, but especially of the work of my teams at MEET Battery Research Center and Helmholtz Institute Münster,” emphasizes Winter. Around 150 scientists at MEET conduct research along the entire battery supply chain: from new and improved materials to battery cell production and recycling. The HI MS team of around 90 people focuses on innovative electrolyte formulations.

Winter has been conducting pioneering work in the field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion for more than 35 years. His focus is on the development of new materials, components and cell designs for lithium ion and lithium metal batteries as well as alternative energy storage systems. The chemist is going to contribute his expertise to the Chemistry Division of EurASc, for example by working in scientific divisions, participating in symposia and seminars or supporting calls for awards and nominations of other researchers.

About the European Academy of Sciences

The EurASc is a non-profit, independent academy that unites Europe’s most accomplished scientists and engineers across disciplines. Its mission is to promote excellence in science and technology, to advocate for evidence-based policymaking, and to strengthen transnational scientific cooperation. EurASc also contributes its expertise to advise other national and international academies and advisory bodies. However, it remains institutionally independent of governments and/or political structures.
