JUNIQ/EPIQ Spring School 2026: Hands-on training in quantum computing

From March 16–20, 2026, the JUNIQ/EPIQ Spring School on Quantum Computing took place at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), bringing together 19 participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. The international cohort—ranging from Bachelor and Master students to PhD candidates and industry professionals—engaged in an intensive program combining lectures and hands-on sessions covering key paradigms of quantum computing.

The curriculum included introductions to gate-based quantum computing, quantum annealing, and quantum simulation, as well as topics such as QUBO formulations, the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), and classical versus quantum optimization. A particular focus was placed on trapped-ion quantum computing, reflecting JUNIQ’s collaboration with eleQtron under the NRW-funded EPIQ project. Contributions from eleQtron experts covered areas including error mitigation, quantum gate implementation, and gate set tomography. Highlights of the program included a keynote-style lecture by Prof. David DiVincenzo on the future of quantum computing and a dedicated introduction to trapped-ion systems by Dr. Michael Johanning.

The school emphasized active learning through hands-on exercises and interactive formats. Poster sessions—featuring short pitches followed by focused discussions—were held twice during the week, allowing participants to present their work and exchange ideas. The program was complemented by a guided tour of Aachen’s historic city center, providing additional opportunities for networking. Overall, the Spring School offered a comprehensive introduction to current quantum computing approaches while fostering exchange within an international community, in line with JUNIQ’s mission to provide accessible quantum computing resources and training to a broad user base.
