Mechanical Workshop

Custom-made Instruments for Outstanding Research

"Second-hand Terminator“ – an interesting "selfie motif": in their free time, employees of the PGI/JCNS-TA workshop built the c. 2 m tall robot-like figure weighing 700 kg from components that were no longer needed.

No two research projects are alike. When highly-specialized scientific questions need to be answered, standard off-the-shelf research instruments are often not enough. This is where our expertise comes into play: the mechanical workshopof the Technical Services and Administration department (PGI/JCNS-TA), in close cooperation with the Engineering &Design department, is capable of developing individually tailored instruments that are as individual as your scientificproject.

We design, build and test the latest sputter systems and measuring stations (beamlines) for use at leading national andinternational neutron and synchrotron sources. Each of these instruments is unique and is tailored exactly to the specificrequirements of both the researchers and the sources used.

Our competent, specialist department is made up of experts from many different fields. This enables us to work quicklyand flexibly to put together a team which best fits your needs.

We specialize in:

• the construction of prototypes
• precision drives
• sample holders
• pressure cells
• vacuum components and
• adjustment devices.

We use special soldering and welding techniques and have an innovative range of equipment and devices at ourdisposal, including:

• machining centres
• CNC milling machines
• CNC lathes
• wire and spark eroding machines
• lasers
• ultrasonic 5-axis CNC milling machines (for use with unusual materials, for example, carbides, ceramics such asAl¬2O3 and glass materials, e.g. sapphire glass).

Drawing on all our years of experience, we are sure to find the right solutions to meet your needs. Even if we ourselvescannot help directly, we are happy to pass on details of a suitable contact from our large network of experts both on andoff campus.

As a joint facility of the many different institutes at the Peter Grünberg Institute, the Jülich Centre for Neutron Scienceand the Institute of Biological Information Processing, we work first and foremost for these departments. However, we are pleased to offer our expertise to other Forschungszentrum institutes and external companies.

We look forward to hearing from you!
