Earthquake monitoring station
Detection of seismic activities at Research Center Jülich
Since 1974, in cooperation with the Bensberg Earthquake Station, the Division of Safety and Radiation Protection operates an earthquake monitoring station at the weather station of the research center. The seismometer signals are evaluated by the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Cologne, to which the Bensberg earthquake station is affiliated. In the early years, the seismometric signals were recorded on tape and regularly sent to Bensberg, today the data is transferred via interet.
In 2011, the earthquake measuring station was modernized. The sensor was moved from its previous, relatively unsteady position in the weather station building to a measuring cabin outside. Since June 2011, the station has also been connected to the internet using new IT equipment. The administration of the station and the continuous retrieval of data is now managed directly from Bensberg. As a result, the Jülich station was integrated into the existing measuring network of the Bensberg earthquake observatory.
Access the seismograms
The data are displayed as diagrams on the homepage of the Bensberg earthquake station. The diagrams show the vertical component of the seismometer measurements. To access the diagrams of the Jülich station, you must set the JUE station at the top left of the diagram area (Station). The date (Datum) of the diagram can be changed. By clicking on the show button (anzeigen, right above the diagram area) shows the records of the Jülich seismometer. Please note that the measurement times are given in UTC. One hour must be added for the conversion to the legal time in Central Europe and two hours must be added during summer time.
