JuWinHPC community breakfast "Diversity & Inclusion" - Monday, September 23 at 10:00 in the JSC Rotunda

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming JuWinHPC community breakfast!

The meeting will focus on diversity and inclusion within the HPC community. It doesn't matter whether you are a successful scientist, already established in the HPC field or a student who is just about to start your first simulation on a supercomputer: we are interested in your stories and opinions.

Do you feel like a member of our (local) HPC community? Do you feel your voice is being heard? We’ve put together some ideas to make this session interactive and fun (have you heard of the „Power Flower“?), but rest assured, there’s no obligation to speak if you prefer just to listen.

We want to explore how our network can further strengthen the community on our campus, and we invite you to join us for coffee and cake to discuss these and other questions. We look forward to a cozy get-together where everyone is welcome, regardless of their expertise, gender, origin, or any other parts of their identity.

We are excited to invite you to a joint meeting and discussion between the German Women in HPC (WHPC) Chapters JuWinHPC and NHR|WHPC. The event will begin with brief introductions of both Chapters, followed by an open discussion with members from both communities. This is an excellent chance to share your thoughts on the challenges, possibilities, and strategies for advancing the role of women in high performance computing. This event will also be an opportunity to gather suggestions for joint activities between the two German WHPC chapters.

Discussion MaTSE training at FZJ on 16/12/2022 at 9:00

Kathrin Sauren from the JSC education team will give a talk about the “MaTSE training at FZJ”. The software developers trained in this profession are potential HPC newcomers but already in this early generation there are only few female applicants. We will discuss questions such as which strategies for recruiting young talents are promising in an exchange ideas with the team of trainers.

Why are there so few women working in HPC? What started with this simple question resulted in the powerful international initiative “Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC: https://womeninhpc.org). The members of this network are working for more equality, diversity and inclusion in the HPC community. The initiative is active at conferences, offers workshops and mentoring programs, and aims to raise more awareness in the HPC community with the slogan "diversity creates a stronger community."  

During the talk Sharon Geva will give a background about women and underrepresented groups in HPC, present the organization WHPC, and explain things organizations and individuals can do to bolster diversity, inclusion, and equity in HPC (and in general).

Thursday 29.09.2022 at 10:00 CT: Discussion with representatives from NCSA, BSC, JSC

On five continents, many institutions and organizations are already working together with WHPC. In this BOS the local networks Women@NCSA (NCSA), WiCS: Women in Computer Sciences (BSC) and JuWinHPC: Jülich Women in HPC (JSC) introduce themselves.

Topics covered in this BOS include the establishment of the individual networks, their activities, goals and values. Members of the NCSA, BSC and JSC will learn  how they can benefit from their local networks; members of other organizations may be interested in starting their own network and can get advice on how to do so. Although the networks were founded by women, ANYONE interested in the topic of equal opportunities is encouraged to join. We look forward to lively discussions, questions and comments of all kinds.
