HiRSE continues, now as Joint Lab

The innovation pool project on Research Software Engineering (RSE) - HiRSE_PS - brings together all programs and centers in the Helmholtz Research Field Information to support the establishment of central RSE activities and the targeted sustainable promotion of strategically important codes by decentralized Community Software Infrastructure (CSI) groups as two mutually beneficial aspects.
The initiative has been quite active in the past year: The successful HiRSE seminar series was continued as a unique exchange platform for RSE topics with national and international reach, which is also mirrored by the international quorum of speakers and attendees in the seminar. KIT and FZJ organized the nationwide first RSE Summer School, held at KIT in September. 45 participants from institutions across Germany learned about RSE topics like collaborative coding, continuous integration, code documentation, and licensing. The event received very good feedback and boosted the visibility and reputation of HiRSE_PS and its driving team members significantly. This was further increased by the HiRSE Code Promotion, a national initiative to highlight research software developed in Germany.
In 2024, the HiRSE_PS initiative was converted into a flexible Joint Laboratory, now under the name “Helmholtz Information - Research Software Engineering” (HiRSE). Due to its continuous successes, funding through the innovation pool was extended until the end of 2027.
