JUNIQ Expands Quantum Research with D-Wave Acquisition
JUNIQ, the Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum Computing, is taking a major step forward in quantum research by acquiring full ownership of the D-Wave Advantage™ quantum annealer. After three years of successful hosting, the system will now be permanently integrated into JUNIQ, ensuring long-term stability and unrestricted access for researchers. The D-Wave system will also be linked to JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, providing unprecedented opportunities for breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and quantum optimization.

In addition to securing ownership of the current system, JUNIQ is set to acquire D-Wave’s next-generation Advantage2™ quantum processor, which promises enhanced performance with doubled coherence, increased connectivity, and a 40% energy scale boost. “With D-Wave's innovative technology, the integration of the system into JUNIQ, and its future coupling with the exascale supercomputer JUPITER, we will take the use of quantum technology in Jülich—and on behalf of Germany and Europe—to a new level,” said Prof. Kristel Michielsen, head of JUNIQ & Quantum Computing at JSC.
This acquisition solidifies JUNIQ’s role as a leading hub for quantum computing in Europe, giving scientists and industry partners the tools to explore novel quantum-classical computing applications. “JSC’s renowned HPC computing expertise combined with our transformational annealing quantum computing technology creates a powerful synergy,” said Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave. “We are excited to see the innovations and applications that will emerge from this important collaboration.”
