Spectroscopy

The "Spectroscopy" department deals with the design, development, implementation and evaluation of low-energy spectroscopic experiments on materials and - in operando - on entire cells for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In particular, we use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (EPR) as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Raman. We focus on understanding dynamic processes on a multiscale basis from nanoseconds to the lifetime of a battery, fuel cell or electrolyzer and elucidating structural properties on length scales from nanometers to millimeters. The aim is to achieve an experimental basis for an exact theoretical description and a knowledge-based improvement of the materials used in terms of performance, service life and safety.
